More GP’s Choose Physiotherapy

A recent national campaign by the Australian Physiotherapy Association has reported Physiotherapist’s to be the most recommended health professional by GP’s.

As a physiotherapist, I believe we have a lot to offer to a broad group of people with many different conditions. Before I graduated in the health profession I would not have known that I could see a physiotherapist to help with problems such as;

  • Parkinson’s Disease      kim massage
  • Strokes
  • Incontinence
  • Jaw Pain
  • Vertigo
  • Pneumonia
  • and many more!

Physiotherapy can be very effective in managing a number of different problems. Recovery is both a physical and mental process. Tissues take time to recover but a patient also needs to believe that what they are doing is the right thing for them and that this process is going to be of benefit. The mind is very powerful and if you don’t think you are going to get better you probably won’t.

In my short career as a physiotherapist I have had people come in to the clinic for a problem they are having and say they “do not believe in physiotherapy”. This is often a greater barrier to recovery than recovering from the actual injury itself. I understand some people are skeptical about new treatments they may not have received before. However, physiotherapy intervention is based on what we call ‘Evidence Based Practice’. This means there is actual scientific studies supporting positive outcomes from our intervention.

It is likely this evidence based approach that increases GP’s choosing to refer patients to our profession. We see the GP as the person at the center of a patients care. The GP holds all their health information and other professionals such as physiotherapists and specialists sit on an outer circle. Due to this central role your physiotherapist will likely receive communication from your GP and feedback information at the beginning, end and sometimes at points along your treatment path.

If you haven’t seen a physiotherapist before and are wondering if it may benefit you, speak to your GP to discuss your options. Alternatively, you can give our staff a call who can assist you in making an informed decision as to whether physiotherapy is for you.
